We met Francis when we were visiting the Kipsongo Slum in January 2025. Francis is 43 years old and had had a stroke 1 year prior to our meeting him. After the stroke he lost use of his right arm and leg. When we met him, he was only able to lie down and he could not control is bladder. We both cried that God would either take him, or God would help us figure out how to help him.
A generous donor provided the funds for Francis to receive 8 weeks of residential physical therapy in Eldoret. Francis has progressed to sitting up and feeding himself. There is a lot of work left to do, but the immediate progress has been huge.
While in the Kipsongo Slum, we were introduced to two families that still lived in plastic garbage homes. These igloo structures are made out of old clothing and plastic bags. The families cook inside the igloo, making it very unsafe for the family and neighbors. Donors provided funds to build two new mud homes, with concrete floors.
We first met Zaihna in 2017, when she was a 6 month old baby with a cleft palate. We were able to get her mouth fixed through surgery. We saw her again when she was 3 years old and hadn't seen her since. We recently saw her on our January 2025 trip and was able to enroll her in a local boarding school. This would allow Zaihna to leave the slum and have a safe place to live. She is now getting an excellent education and 3 meals a day.
When we visit Kenya, our missionary friend, Jolanda, takes us to the Kibera Slum to meet new people and bless them. We were recently able to donate $500 to her project. Jolanda helps boys avoid gang life and earn their way out of the slum. If they follow the outlined protocol, they are able to learn farming. Once they graduate the program, they are awarded with a farm job.
